Critter Care Gala

Critter Care in Langley is having their annual fundraising gala on Apr. 25th at 5pm. Please consider buying a ticker for $100 to support their important work!

Each year Critter Care received and cares for hundreds of animals, big and small. The have a list of supplies needed on their website, but of course, money is the biggest help.

The Gala will be a great event and we hope to see you there!

Review the BC Conservation Office Services

Greetings Premier Horgan, Ministers, and BC Conservation Service executives

As a concerned citizen of BC I am writing you to demand a review of our province's Conservation Officer Services. I am concerned about hunting culture and hiring practices in the BCCOS, and the lack of independent oversight of the department.

A Vancouver Sun article from March 2018 revealed that 70% of Conservation Officers are hunters, information that was released by the BC government after several Freedom of Information requests (1).  Furthermore, Assistant Deputy Minister Jim Standen stated in writing to the Executive Director of Stop Animal Brutality that Conservation Officers engage with hunting organizations as part of their job, and hunt outside of work. A former Conservation Officer spoke out against a kill-rather-than-conserve mentality within the COS (1). One 2017 recruitment ad highlighted the hunting appeal, asking observers if they “want to tranquilize a grizzly bear?” and “be up close and personal with a live grizzly and get paid for doing it?” (2).  Simply put, hunters managing wildlife is a conflict of interest.

The BCCOS also lacks independent oversight. There is no separate regulatory or investigatory body to look into complaints. If a member of the public files a complaint against the BCCOS, it is investigated by the BCCOS, not an independent body.

I am alleging a conflict of interest and lack of independent oversight, and demand an impartial investigation into the organization in charge of protecting BC's majestic wildlife.
